Tripp Bulla and Jeff Smith formed BSDE in May of 1999 after spending 29 combined years in private engineering practice. Both are registered Professional Engineers in North and South Carolina.

Jeff’s expertise is in civil site development, water and sewer infrastructure, and urban hydrology. He places great emphasis on early determination of all parameters of the site, from environmental concerns to transportation issues to zoning regulations. A Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control, he understands the importance of project permitting to budget and schedule. Years working for municipalities throughout North Carolina have given him a valuable background in water and sewer works, including backflow prevention, hydraulic system analysis, gravity sewer design and pump station and force main design.

Tripp’s expertise is in building structures of all types. His career has involved the design of millions of square feet of buildings including: High-Rise steel and concrete office towers hotels and condominiums, hospitals, airport terminals, schools, labs, and wood framed multi-family residential projects. With experience from the east coast to west coast, he is well versed in seismic, and wind design in various regions as well as a wide variety of construction materials and methods. His interests in heavy glued laminated timber construction have resulted in several unique and beautiful structures utilizing this environmentally “green” material.

As the result of years of work for both public and private clients throughout the southeast, BSDE is very familiar with the local, State and Federal regulations and codes that govern the design of projects. Our continuing education as well as membership in various code and engineering organizations helps to insure that our designs are efficiently produced and permitted. In addition, we work diligently with contractors to insure that even all of our designs can be economically constructed.

BSDE offers a broad background of project experience, including Municipal, Educational, Institutional, Environmental, Governmental, Military and Commercial projects at the local, State and Federal levels.
As of year end 2002, BSDE has completed over 80 commissions with a combined construction value in excess of 300 million dollars and individual project values ranging up to 50 million dollars.
